unicef child friendly city

What changes when we truly empower children in our cities?

Europe's sustainable transition needs cities that build trust and make long-term decisions.

Aalborg's UNICEF certification is a governance model that does exactly that.

Children make proposals directly to City Council. Students select school leaders. Pupils co-designed a safe-routes app now implemented by the traffic department. Cities that embed participation structurally produce stronger institutions, higher social trust, and the talent retention that Europe's innovation ecosystems depend on.

Because cities that listen… build better.

🏛️ Better public services.
🫶 Better communities.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Better talent retention.

What is a UNICEF Child Friendly City

A UNICEF Child Friendly City is not a campaign, a one‑time celebration, or a symbolic label. It is a long‑term commitment to placing children’s rights, voices, and well‑being at the centre of local decision‑making.

On 20 November 2022, Aalborg was officially recognised as a UNICEF Child Friendly City following a three‑year collaboration between Aalborg Municipality and UNICEF Denmark. The recognition confirms that the city works systematically to turn the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into concrete local action.

Why It Matters Beyond Childhood

The Child Friendly City Initiative also plays an important role in Aalborg’s international profile.

Catharina Vinther Engqvist, Head of Foreign Direct Investments at Invest in Aalborg, highlights the significance of the initiative in a global context:

- “When companies come knocking on our door, we are not only talking about economics, square metres, and supply chains. We are talking workforce, work‑life balance, and human beings.”

As global attention increasingly turns to quality of life, families, and social responsibility, initiatives like UNICEF Child Friendly City send a strong signal.

In conversations with international investors, partners, and talent, values such as democracy, equality, and care for the next generation increasingly resonate.
