Nursing Home of the Future
How do we scale care, without losing what makes it human?Ageing populations put care systems under pressure across Europe. The Nursing Home of the Future is a public-private environment where welfare technology is developed and tested in real care conditions - with the people who actually use it.
Better outcomes for citizens. Practical support for staff.
A model for how Europe innovates in care.
What is the Nursing Home of the Future?
The Nursing Home of the Future is not just a building - it is a living lab for care innovation, where new technologies, workflows, and care models are developed, tested, and refined in everyday practice. Instead of designing solutions in isolation, companies, researchers, care staff, and residents collaborate directly in real-life settings to ensure that innovations actually work in practice.
At its core, it responds to a structural challenge: more elderly citizens combined with limited resources and workforce shortages. This creates pressure to find solutions that both improve quality of care and reduce strain on staff. Welfare technologies - such as smart sensors, assistive devices, and digital monitoring are introduced not as replacements for care, but as tools to enhance independence, safety, and efficiency.
What makes the concept distinctive is the co-creation approach. Residents and caregivers are not passive users but active participants in shaping solutions. This helps bridge a common gap in healthcare innovation, where technologies often fail because they do not match real needs or workflows. Living lab environments enable continuous testing, feedback, and iteration, increasing the likelihood of successful adoption.
A test and demonstration site:
-
New technologies are implemented in real apartments and care routines
-
Staff test how solutions affect workload and care quality
-
Citizens experience how technologies support daily life and independence
-
Companies gain validated insights before scaling solutions to broader markets
Ultimately, the Nursing Home of the Future represents a shift from traditional care facilities to innovation ecosystems embedded in care environments. It is both a place of living and a platform for transformation - where better care, smarter use of resources, and new industries can emerge simultaneously.
