CCUS in Aalborg

The capture, storage and utilization of Carbon (CCUS) is increasingly recognized as an important technology for reducing CO₂ emissions globally. The technology is showing enormous potential and Aalborg is positioned as a key location in the further development.

CCUS activities are emerging all across the North Danish region

North Denmark is considered an ideal location for CCUS projects. The geographical and knowledge-based foundation of North Denmark is truly unique, with point sources, underground storage conditions, world-class researchers, authorities, and companies capable of demonstrating and scaling CCUS technologies for eventual commercialization.

Why Carbon capture utilization and storage in North Denmark?

  • The entire CCUS value chain is here -Companies, researchers, test facilities etc.
  • Significant emission sources for large-scale testing
  • Biogas plants and potential for expanding biogas production
  • The logistics, infrastructure and shipping options are ideal
  • Great space and storage options -both onshore and offshore
  • Integrated energy systems across electricity, heat, cooling, gas
  • The highest-ranked engineering university in Europe
  • Large scale Power-to-x facilities coming soon

In 2023 Aalborg hosted the CCUS Forum, where the Aalborg-declaration for "cross-border carbon capture utilization and storage in Europe" was signed.

Power-to-X plant in Aalborg to capture CO2 and use it for green fuel

One of the world’s first Power-to-x plants will be established in Aalborg and is expected to be completed in 2028. The facility will produce renewable methanol made from green electricity, water and captured CO2 from waste incineration.

The project will include an electrolysis plant that will convert the green electricity into hydrogen, which in combination with the captured CO2 is converted into methanol.

Annually the plant will recycle 180,000 tonnes of waste-based CO2 and is expected to produce 130,000 tonnes of green methanol a year, which can be directly used as fuel in the heavy traffic and transport sector. The excess heat from the plant will be distributed into the district heating network.

Aalborg has the research, the test facilities and the overall framework to develop the CCUS technologies into a viable and essential asset to the green transition.

Aalborg University

The key to a world class workforce and pioneering research

Aalborg University is awarded the best engineering university in Europe and one of the research missions of the university is defined as Circularity and Carbon Capture.

The objective of the Circularity and Carbon Capture research is to extend the life time and lifecycles of products’ lifetime by repurposing second-life applications. And one approach is the capture of carbon for fuel usage.

At Aalborg University you will find the sharpest minds and the most prominent research within Carbon Capture and world class solutions and business is emerging based on the work created at the university .

Researchers at AAU Energy include: Frede Blaabjerg, Lasse Rosendahl, Henrik Lund, Søren Knudsen Kær, Brian Vad Mathiesen, Mads Pagh Nielsen and Zhe Chen.

Norbis Park

A green living lab

The area around Nordjyllandsværket is being transformed into a massive test and demonstration center within green water and energy solutions of the future.

The area where the power plant is located, amounts to approx. 90 hectares and the city is preparing the area to house facilities for research, testing and development of new technologies.

One of the larger projects to be established at the site is a power-to-x plant, which is to produce green methanol made from captured CO2, green electricity and water.

The ambition is to create a sustainable, vibrant environment with a focus on synergy, partnerships and resource sharing and the testing of new forms of energy, such as solar and wind energy, excess heat, geothermal energy, fuel cells and heat pumps.

Aalborg Portland as a living lab

New CO2 capture plant

The global production of cement has grown very rapidly in recent years and the industry represents one of the world's most climate-damaging industries.

A New CO2 capture plant at cement company Aalborg Portland is ready to gain the next important experiences with CCS.

The CO2 capture plant aims to test a more energy-efficient CCS technology, and at the same time, the new plant will contribute essential experiences ahead of Aalborg Portland's planned investment in a full-scale CO2 capture plant. process conditions in Aalborg Portland’s cement plat.

As Aalborg Portland is a large emitter of CO2, the prospect of testing new large scale technology in a real-life context and location will be an extremely important experiment and the learnings can end up changing the pace of the green transition worldwide.
