Green Fuels and Fuel Cells in Aalborg
We need to make a move towards sustainable energy sources. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), E-methanol and methanol fuel cells systems are already used commercially around the world as a green alternative and Aalborg is leading the way.
A Hub for Green Fuels
In recent years, Aalborg has transformed into a world-leading hub for green fuels, where companies from the entire value chain are present in the region. Pioneering companies in the city are right now changing the transport and automotive sector as we know it and they are supported by the best engineering university in Europe.
Aalborg can offer access to partners within the whole green fuel value chain:
- R&D
- Hardware Production
- End-users
- Test & demonstration
- Fuel infrastructure
- Fuel production
Aalborg has a clear common goal: to stand together to take the lead in the green transition and become CO2-neutral.

World class setup for large-scale testing within power-to-x
Aalborg is known for innovative quadruple helix partnerships. From research, business, government and all the way to the consumers.
Fjord PtX Aalborg
Fjord PtX will not only meet but exceed Denmark's domestic flight fuel requirements by an impressive 250%.
What is Fjord PtX?
Fjord PtX is a Danish Power-to-X project that uses advanced technology to make eco-friendly fuel for airplanes.
- The plant is expected to cover 20 ha, corresponding to 26 football fields
- Fjord PtX will recycle 330,000 tons of CO2 annually
- Fjord PtX will produce approximately 90,000 tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel annually
FjordPtX will be a cornerstone in Aalborg's green ecosystem and underline the city's green ambitions.
Aalborg University
The key to a world class workforce and pioneering researchAalborg University is awarded the best engineering university in Europe and one of the research missions of the university is defined as Sustainable Fuels, chemicals and PtX.
The research mission is covering the production of green, renewable, and carbon footprint reduced fuels such as methanol and other electrofuels.
The goal is to continue to develop and optimise integrated sustainable fuel processes to push the green transition.
Researchers at Aalborg University include: Frede Blaabjerg, Lasse Rosendahl, Henrik Lund, Søren Knudsen Kær, Brian Vad Mathiesen, Mads Pagh Nielsen and Zhe Chen.
What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?
Fjord PtX will transform the electricity generated from renewable sources into green hydrogen and eventually into SAF (the 'X' in PtX).
By merging green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis, with CO2 captured from sources such as biogas production or waste incineration, SAF can be created that is chemically identical to conventional aviation fuel.
The technologies employed in electrolysis and the industrial processes used to produce SAF are well-established. These technologies are currently being modernized and streamlined to play a significant role in the green transition.
The Methanol Fuel Cell
Methanol and fuel cells have the potential to contribute significantly to overcoming classic wind power challenges by utilizing excess wind power production for Power-to x. The fuel cells offer a much needed green alternative to combustion engines and diesel generators.
Sustainable energy, like wind power, can be used to produce methanol known as “liquid electricity” which is easy to store and transport to a relevant location where it can be used as a sustainable fuel in the transport sector.
The fuel cell manufacturers Advent Technologies and Blue World Technologies are both present in Aalborg and last mentioned is in the process of building the world's largest methanol fuel cell factory in Aalborg
Norbis Park
A green living labThe area around Nordjyllandsværket is being transformed into a massive test and demonstration center within green water and energy solutions of the future.
The area where the power plant is located, amounts to approx. 90 hectares and the city is preparing the area to house facilities for research, testing and development of new technologies.
One of the larger projects to be established at the site is a power-to-x plant, which is to produce green fuels made from captured CO2, green electricity and water.
The ambition is to create a sustainable, vibrant environment with a focus on synergy, partnerships and resource sharing and the testing of new forms of energy, such as solar and wind energy, excess heat, geothermal energy, fuel cells and heat pumps.
