Aalborg Charter
The "Aalborg Charter" (1994) is a sustainability initiative for urban areas, approved by the participants at the initial European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns in Aalborg, Denmark.
The initiative was motivated by the Rio Earth Summit's Local Agenda 21 plan and was designed to help the European Union's Environmental Action Program, 'Towards Sustainability.' The Charter is founded on the accord of individuals, municipalities, NGOs, national and international organizations, and scientific bodies.
The Charter has been signed by over 3000 local authorities from more than 40 countries, resulting in the most comprehensive European movement of its kind.
In 2024, we'll be marking three special milestones: the 10th edition of our conference, the 30th anniversary of the Aalborg Charter which started in 1994, and the 20th anniversary of the Aalborg Commitments from 2004.
