Aalborg UniversityThe key to a world class workforce and pioneering research
Aalborg University is awarded the best engineering university in Europe and one of the research missions of the university is defined as Electrification and Energy Integration.
The research mission is about the creation of a stronger link between of all kinds of energy systems across electricity, heating and cooling, gas, transportation and water - utilizing the power of citizens to contribute to energy transition, increasing the flexibility of the overall energy system, and using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels.
Researchers at Aalborg University include: Frede Blaabjerg, Lasse Rosendahl, Henrik Lund, Søren Knudsen Kær, Brian Vad Mathiesen, Mads Pagh Nielsen and Zhe Chen.
Industrial Symbiosis in Aalborg
Industrial symbiosis is a model where different industries work together to create a closed-loop system of resource utilization. One company’s waste can become another company’s raw material.
Aalborg is a pioneer in this field, showcasing several district energy initiatives that foster industrial symbiosis and intelligent energy utilization. Learn more about Industrial Symbiosis in Aalborg below.
The 4DH Research Centre
4DH is an international research centre developing 4th generation district heating technologies and systems.
The centre is working within the three areas of district heating: Grids and components, Production and system integration and Planning and implementation.
The district heating sector has a significant potential for green growth and with a district heating share of 50% and a large export of district heating technology, Denmark is a pioneer within the area.
Norbis ParkA green living lab
The area around Nordjyllandsværket is being transformed into a massive test and demonstration center within green water and energy solutions of the future.
The area where the power plant is located, amounts to approx. 90 hectares and the city is preparing the area to house facilities for research, testing and development of new technologies.
One of the larger projects to be established at the site is a power-to-x plant, which is to produce green methanol made from captured CO2, green electricity and water.
The ambition is to create a sustainable, vibrant environment with a focus on synergy, partnerships and resource sharing and the testing of new forms of energy, such as solar and wind energy, excess heat, geothermal energy, fuel cells and heat pumps.
